The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame and KNBR 680 Donate $30,000 to Alameda Sports Programs
The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame and KNBR 680 announced today that they will donate $30,000 to the Alameda Education Foundation to support high school sports programs affected by the recent budget cuts in Alameda. KNBR’s afternoon host and Alameda resident, Tom Tolbert, will kick off the Razor and Mr. T show on KNBR 680 and 1050 today with the announcement and ask listeners to support this and many other local sports programs desperately needing funding.
Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame President Thomas Martz and KNBR VP/General Manager Tony Salvadore commented, “The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame has been helping kids play sports since its origin in 1980, donating over $4 million to youth sports programs…and we’re pleased to be able to join our partner KNBR in this effort. There’s never been a more critical time to support school sports than now!” Of the $30,000 donation, $15,000 will be allocated to Alameda High School Sports, and $15,000 to Encinal High School Sports.
Joining the Razor and Mr. T on the show today are well-known east bay athletes, including Ray Guy, a former Oakland Raiders Punter; Dontrelle Willis, an alumni of Encinal High School who now pitches for the Detroit Tigers; as well as John Brown, the Encinal High School Quarterback and baseball player who was a part of the Encinal High School student walk-out on Tuesday. The athletes will be encouraging community members and organizations to call-in and help support the Alameda Education Foundation.
On Tuesday, March 4, 2008, the Alameda School District Board announced they were cutting $200,000 out of high school sports programs in response to the state’s proposed budget cuts. On Wednesday, March 5, 2008, hundreds of students and faculty members walked out of their classes at Encinal and Alameda High Schools and marched to the Alameda School District Headquarters in protest to the budget cuts to their sports programs.
VP/General Manager Tony Salvadore adds, “Sports are the life-blood of what we do here at KNBR, so we have set up a special email address where schools all over the Bay Area can tell us about their fundraising efforts. We will then highlight them on KNBR.com to help bring the much needed media attention”.
